Sporting Futures

About Us

What's Our Objective?

The aim of Sporting Futures is to assist aspiring young athletes reach their sporting and leadership potential, and through this progress benefit our wider community.

Why are we establishing Sporting Futures?

There is an obvious and easily identifiable opportunity for the provision of resources into a well-structured, fully funded sports development programme, delivered to assist young and gifted athletes currently considered 'outside' of the traditional New Zealand Academy of Sport high performance sports funding model.

In order to fill this funding and resource void, the Sporting Futures Charitable Trust, alongside its affiliated providers, has developed a Sport and Leadership Scholarship Programme for the ‘future generation’ of Canterbury (and New Zealand) athlete.

The Sporting Futures model is focused on increasing the potential of developing athletes through specialised skills and tactical coaching, sports specific physical training, life skill and athlete mentoring guidance.

Sporting Futures have targeted different sporting codes for the initial first phase of implementation and has secured highly competent, qualified, experienced high performance coaches for each sport.

Sports currently offered in the Sporting Futures Scholarship Programme include Rugby, Football, and Hockey.

Sport Specific Coaching and Physical Conditioning

Scholarship athletes will receive specialised, sports specific skill and tactical coaching from the Sporting Futures High Performance Coaching staff.  Individual and team focused skill development, coupled with technique analysis and review are key components of the Scholarship programme.  ‘Hands on Coaching’ will be delivered by experienced, qualified High Performance Coaches.

Every Scholarship athlete will be involved in sports specific physical conditioning conducted by Sporting Futures Trainers.  Each athlete will be provided with and supervised in an individualized, periodised (seasonal), functional strength and conditioning plan designed to increase physical performance and skill development.

Education, Vocation and Life Skill Development

The Sporting Futures Scholarship programme, in conjunction with its sports specific requirements, shall also include an extensive tuition and workshop portfolio in Nutrition, Mental Skills, Financial Planning, Leadership, Time Management, Self-Massage, First Aid, Coaching Accreditation.  In addition, a comprehensive Life Skill Mentoring programme from current and past elite national and international athletes will be available to all Sporting Futures athletes.

Successful applicants requiring vocational or educational guidance will be provided with career pathway assistance and direction.  An Educational partnership has been established with the Aoraki Polytechnic for potential scholars in their Diploma in Sport programme.  Additional education and vocation opportunities are currently being developed.

Further incentive plans for athletes including financial assistance, based upon merit ,may be offered to athletes for educational expenses.  Additionally, it is envisaged that exceptional Sporting Futures Scholarship leaders will be promoted and funding granted to participate in the highly prized New Zealand Outward Bound programmes.
